Hopefully, this will help answer some of the many questions people have........
I've never had a massage before, what can I expect?
When you first come in, I will ask you to fill out a short health form. We will then discuss any concerns that you may have and what kind of massage you would like. Your comfort is paramount, so while you are on the massage table, bolsters may be placed under your knees or ankles, and care is taken to make sure you are neither too hot or too cold. Depending on the type of massage, oil may or may not be used. After a session, expect to feel relaxed. Immediately after, many people get a "floating" feeling, or may feel slightly disoriented. These sensations do not usually last long, and feel free to sit for a while before you drive!
Why do you need my health information?
Just like any health professional, my job is to help you, not hurt you or make any conditions worse. Many health conditions may have either contraindications or just need extra care with certain types of massage or massage techniques. A few examples follow.
1) High blood pressure - there is a high correlation between high blood pressure and plaque build up in the main blood vessels of the neck. I'm extra careful when having to work any of the muscles or tissues in the front half of the neck so as not to disturb the arteries.
2) Diabetes - many people with diabetes have decreased blood flow and sensitivity in the hands and feet. If I'm not aware of the problem, too much pressure may be applied and tissues damaged.
3) Screws or pins left in the body - Often when someone fractures a bone, screws or pins are left permanently in. Pressing deep on one of these pins can be painful for you and possibly bruise the soft tissue around it. Not to mention the fact that hopefully you are not coming to me with a new fracture and have yet seen a Doctor!
4) Medications - blood thinners are very important to know about. Deep work may cause serious bruising if done while you are taking those medications.
Do I need to take all my clothes off?
It depends on the type of massage. There are some modalities, such as shiatsu or craniosacral work where it is traditional for the clothes to stay on. For most bodywork, it is dependant on your comfort level. Most people getting a swedish, deep tissue, esalen style or lymphatic drainage take off everything. You will always be covered by a sheet, and nothing "personal" will ever be exposed. Some people, however, due to modesty, cultural or religious reasons, or simply trust, are more comfortable with at least underwear on, and some may need more than that. Do what is comfortable for you!!!
Do you accept insurance?
Unfortunately, at this time, no. However, some insurance companies will reimburse you for therapeutic massage. I'm happy to provide you with an itemized receipt that you can forward to your insurance carrier.
Will a session with you interfere with my chiropractic treatments?
Maybe...... With a massage session, generally no. I encourage you to get both Chiropractic treatment and massage! Some Chiropractors do have different preferences however. Some prefer you get a massage before adjusting, some prefer after. If you have any doubts, please ask your Doctor if bodywork is ok for your particular health concerns. I'm also happy to answer any questions your Doctor may have regarding the kind of work I do. However, in my practice I am doing more and more Bowenwork. Bowen does not interfere with your Chiropractic adjustments. Chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture and other forms of massage therapy may lessen the effectiveness of Bowen work. I'm happy to try and work around any scheduling issues.
Why do I need to drink water after a massage?
Bodywork will release tension, constrictions and trigger points in the body. This increases circulation allowing blood and lymph to move more freely through out the tissues. This also means that waste products will be flushed out. You want to hydrate so that these waste products are eliminated more quickly.
What forms of payment do you take?
I accept cash, checks, Visa and Mastercard.
Are there any age restrictions?
Absolutely not! I have worked on children as young as two, and many of my clients are well into their 80's and 90's. With minor's, I do require parental consent.
